For real. I paid sixty bucks on a doggie bed and my pupper never sleeps in it, he'd rather the ground. But does he piss on it? Sure

My pupper recently got a hematoma in her front knee. Vet suggested soft rugs and bed to avoid this in the future. She already has two beds, each cost double of mine. She avoids them like the plague. I bought ridiculously costly, super soft rugs to keep under my bed since that's where she loves to sleep. She doesn't go there anymore. I have tried knee braces with padding, she chewed them off within a day. Now I have given up.

Or OP can try what I did with my older Malamute/Akita who refused to get on his orthopedic bed... I curled up on it and invited him to come snuggle. We took a few naps together like that before he decided to use it on his own.

My dog also prefers to lay on hard floors, in spite of having two different kinds of expensive dog beds and full furniture access. It probably wouldn't be so bad if he would lay down normally, but instead he drops himself down like a sack of potatoes. I cringe when I hear all his bones hitting the hardwood. It sounds like vet bills.

I got my dog a normal circular dog bed and after a few weeks she took out all the stuffing out from the middleโ€ฆ oh ok she likes flat beds no big deal. So i get her a flat bed. She would spend a few minutes kinda folding it just right before she laid to sleepโ€ฆ. Oh ok then, I guess she wants a big fluffy bedโ€ฆ i thought. So i get her one of them big ass pillow looking beds. She used it for a few days before she tore it up and removed about 50% of the stuffingโ€ฆ.. bruh smh now i give her whatever pillows and blankets for her to sleep during the day and is a new set up every time.

Yessss!!! Why do they have to throw themselves down so hard?! My dog has spondylosis and has had two knee surgeries, but consistently finds the one spot in the house without rugs to throw herself down on.

Yeah my dog didn't like beds until I took an old blanket of mine and laid it out for her. Now she sleeps on it every night

Have a 115lb arthritic double-coated dog in San Antonio. Getting a cooling mattress/pad made all the difference for getting her to use her bed.

I ridiculously paid $300 for a memory foam ottoman for my elder pup so she could look out the window with ease. New kitten will claim it when doggos off it and she just sits in front pouting but won't kick him off either. They lie about loving each other.

I started throwing treats on it for my dog so he got the picture to go ON it. He would lay next to it and put one paw on it. Lol. Old arthritis dog loves his bed now.

He prefers to sleep on the this carpet or hardwood. I've read that older dogs should sleep in orthopedic beds to help with arthritis or bad joints (I give him joint supplements every morning before our walk).when I try to get him to sleep in his bed he growls and tries to run away

โœ… What Works

  • A cooling-pad addition reportedly helped one arthritic dog start using her bed
  • Some owners successfully coax reluctant dogs onto the bed with treats or by snuggling on it together

โš ๏ธ Worth Knowing

  • Dogs refusing to use the bed at all is the dominant complaint across owner reports
  • Getting a dog to adopt the bed often requires active training/coaxing, not guaranteed
  • Some dogs tear through and destroy the stuffing within days
  • The intended orthopedic benefit is moot if the dog won't lie on it
ClearPick Verdict

Dog bed owner discussion centers heavily on one specific and common complaint: dogs simply refusing to use them, which comes up in 6 of 11 mentions (plus 3 more discussing workarounds). Several owners describe expensive orthopedic beds being ignored entirely in favor of hardwood floors or human beds, even by arthritic dogs the bed is meant to help. A few owners had success by adding treats or snuggling on the bed to encourage use, and a cooling-pad addition specifically helped one arthritic dog adopt hers. Durability is also a concern for dogs that do use it โ€” one owner's dog tore through the stuffing within days. Worth trying if your dog already likes soft or raised surfaces and you're prepared to coax them onto it gradually; if your dog strongly prefers hard floors, don't expect an orthopedic bed alone to change that.
