The FR55 is solid for getting actual GPS data instead of relying on phone accuracy. Pair it with Garmin Connect and you'll see how much better the tracking is compared to Strava's phone GPS.

GPS is accurate especially if you set it on GPS + GLONASS settings although mas malakas lang mag consume ng battery life but not much. As someone din na mabilis pag pawisan and always run in the rain, the absence of touch screen is sort of advantage.

Pro: It's a relatively cheap watch. For people saying the gps is off a lot, I only had an issue once in a mountainous area. Other than that it always has been spot on in the last 2 years. Con: it misses a lot of features modern watches do have. Like being able to display a map on it.

Can vouch sa pros, been using this for 1 year na and walang problems. Ang pinaka ayoko eh yung charging port niya.

I'm not sure touch screen is worth it on a running watch. When you've got sweaty hands, clicking buttons is brilliant.

A friend of mine just got it and returned it. I am a huge Garmin fan, but I felt so bad having talked her into it. The GPS was off by about 50% (in cities, forests, open areas) and the lack of a touch screen feels very outdated.

had mine for about 2 years now and gps is pretty solid, battery lasts forever too which is nice when you forget to charge it in few days

I connected the watch to Garmin Express, did an update and when I went out for a run, I made sure the Garmin Connect app was running in the background. It connected to GPS almost immediately!

I just received a Frontrunner 55. I really like it except for the GPS accuracy. I am running in a very difficult environment (between high-rise buildings and some trees), but my Samsung S21 manages perfect accuracy, while my Garmin is completely off.

I don't think gagawin ko pa yun kasi sobrang satisfied na ako dito... Physical Buttons/Non-touch screen - napaka reliable lalo kung umuulan or basa ng pawis yung kamay mo... Battery life - 2 weeks or more of use if minimal or walang activity, once a week ka lang magchacharge if heavy user.

โœ… What Works

  • The Garmin Forerunner 55 is the most accessible entry point into the Garmin GPS running ecosystem, and it earns its place in the lineup by including features that runners starting out genuinely need without overwhelming them with complexity. Suggested Daily Workouts โ€” adaptive training recommendations that adjust based on your recent activity โ€” are a standout feature at this price. Instead of guessing what to run each day, the watch recommends easy runs, intervals, long runs, or rest based on your training load and recovery status. For runners building a base, this is a coaching assist.
  • The 20-hour GPS battery life is generous for a watch at this price, exceeding many competitors in the fitness tracker category and most comparable GPS watches. For marathon runners and long-distance event athletes, a 20-hour GPS window covers every realistic race scenario without battery anxiety. The 20-day smartwatch estimate is practical โ€” charge once every two weeks in normal training use.
  • GPS + GLONASS connectivity delivers reliable outdoor tracking for road running and groomed trail use. The track accuracy is better than fitness tracker GPS (like the Fitbit Charge 6) and competitive with other mid-range GPS watches. The barometric altimeter isn't present โ€” elevation data comes from GPS โ€” but for the typical road runner this is a non-issue.
  • Body Battery is Garmin's energy monitoring system, and even in its simplified implementation on the Forerunner 55 (without the full HRV Status analysis of more expensive models), it provides actionable daily insight. Seeing a Body Battery of 23/100 in the morning is a concrete signal to run easy today; 85/100 signals you're ready for a hard effort. Cadence alerts add a useful form coaching layer โ€” set a target cadence and the watch buzzes when you drift above or below.

โš ๏ธ Worth Knowing

  • The Forerunner 55 does not have Daily HRV Status or Training Readiness โ€” these are reserved for the Forerunner 265 and above. The recovery advisor and Body Battery are simpler versions of those concepts. For runners who want the full picture on recovery and readiness, the 265 at $599 CAD is worth the upgrade. The 55 is best for runners who want GPS accuracy, suggested workouts, and battery life without the data overhead.
  • There is no music storage or contactless payment on the Forerunner 55 โ€” it's a dedicated GPS running watch, not a smartwatch. For music while running, you need a phone. For tap payments, you need your wallet. If those features matter to you, consider the Forerunner 265.
  • The 1.04" display is compact and perfectly readable outdoors, but it shows fewer data fields simultaneously than larger watches. Advanced runners who want 8 fields per data screen will hit the display limit quickly. The Forerunner 55 is most comfortable showing 2-4 fields per screen.
  • The Forerunner 55 does not have multi-band GPS โ€” it uses standard GPS + GLONASS. In dense urban environments or under heavy forest canopy, track accuracy can be visibly less precise than multi-band watches. For most suburban and park running, this doesn't matter. For technical trail running or city running in Manhattan-style canyons, the Forerunner 265's multi-band GPS is a meaningful upgrade.
ClearPick Verdict

The Garmin Forerunner 55 is the best sub-$300 GPS running watch on the market โ€” it delivers Garmin's suggested workout coaching, 20-hour GPS battery, Body Battery monitoring, and reliable tracking in a package that doesn't require a manual to operate. It's the right watch for new to intermediate runners who want more than a basic fitness tracker but don't need the full depth โ€” and cost โ€” of the Forerunner 265 or Fenix 7.
