It has its flaws, but after so many years it still is one of the best implemented expandable bags around.

The zippers are waterproof, so they're more firm on the effort for opening and closing. Also, the shape of the curves and angles took away from the fluidity. Also a little complex for the expansion/different two main pockets.
For my needs, I find the pockets are just too small to be useful (in addition to the inside feeling like a cheap Walmart bag). Also, I recently saw one wearing it packed out and I asked myself how did I not see how dorky it looks with both water bottle flaps sticking out?
Was my first backpack that got me into bags. Took me forever to find a good replacement that met my 3 requirements: clamshell, 2 water bottle pockets and good harness system. Zippers suck, heavy but did those 3 things very well.
Had several nomatic bags. Professional looking but very heavy and space inefficient with all the material and organization.
I just got the Nomatic 20L travel pack in advance of some work travel over the next few months. I bought both the 20L and the 14L - there seemed to be a difference in quality between the two. The 14L bag felt cheaper in the zippers specifically.
✅ What Works
- NOMATIC's organizational system is the best-in-class for the minimalist travel backpack category—22 designated pockets and compartments with labeled magnetic compression straps, dedicated cord management, and separate wet/dry compartment keep every item in its designed place
- The 300D coated tarpaulin with welded seams provides genuine waterproof protection (not just water-resistant) that matters during transit in Canadian winters or unexpected rain without needing a separate pack cover
- The magnetic compression straps are NOMATIC's signature feature—straps that flip from backpack carry to side carry to compact compressed mode with one motion, enabling the bag to shrink to 20L when partially loaded
- Lifetime guarantee backs a product built to the tolerance of a $329 price point—zippers, seams, fabric, and hardware are noticeably more robust than competitors at this price
⚠️ Worth Knowing
- 20L (expandable to 28L) is a tight fit for more than 3–4 days of clothing even with packing cubes; this is a carry-on optimized for 1–3 night trips or minimalist packers who bring 2–3 outfit changes maximum
- The organizational depth means the bag takes genuine time to learn—many compartments feel identical from the outside, and new users spend the first few trips searching for items before building muscle memory
- At $329, NOMATIC prices overlap with Osprey Farpoint 40 (larger, more ergonomic suspension) and Peak Design 45L (more camera-friendly); the NOMATIC wins on organization but loses on ergonomics for extended carry
The NOMATIC Travel Pack 20L is the right bag for minimalist one-bag travelers who live by the 3-1-1 packing philosophy and want the most organized small carry-on available. The organizational system, waterproof construction, and lifetime guarantee justify the $329 for those who will use this for frequent travel in its niche. If you pack more than 3 days of clothes, or want volume-per-dollar rather than organizational density, the Osprey Farpoint 40 at the same price delivers better value.
