Unless you're going to be moving it around a lot I would go with corded. Generally more powerful and you don't have to mess with batteries. Mine stays in one location plugged in and ready to go.

Surprised to see the contractor who did our windows using one of those sliding miter saws. These guys were serious with their Dewalt framing guns and Milwaukee equipment. I thought they couldn't be caught dead with a Ryobi, but they used the miter saw.

Sliding miter saws shine when you are doing a lot of large boards like in a deck, so for general household stuff the static one is fine. Just make sure you square up the fence if you are doing a lot of miter cuts so that your angles match up nice and clean.

benchtop tools never do good in cordless varieties, no matter the brand. that being said, as long as you dont plan to use the saw to build a house with the cordless one the 10" blade is hard not to consider when wanting an upgrade.

Even the corded version isn't so heavy that moving it around is going to be a problem.

Oh this one is corded, my contractors had the battery one even though they had a corded table saw and could easily just plug in both.

If only the saw was dual bevel, I'd grab it right away. It's honestly such a small difference it's almost petty that they're drawing the line between rigid and ryobi on something like a bevel feature ... I still feel it wouldn't have cost much to add variable speed

Yeah it looks great. Although one thing compared to the old one is that this is Single bevel which is a bummer since the older one was dual.

โœ… What Works

  • At $199 CAD including a 40-tooth blade, the TSS103 is among the most affordable compound miter saws from a recognized brand with parts and service availability in Canada. For homeowners doing crown moulding, baseboard installation, door casing, and framing cuts, this price point enables the purchase where a $400โ€“$600 sliding compound miter saw would be out of reach.
  • A 52ยฐ miter range in both directions enables cuts well beyond standard 45ยฐ trim joints โ€” compound angle cuts for cathedral ceiling crown moulding, angled corner joints in non-standard rooms, and rake cut baseboard on sloped walls all fall within range. The positive stops at 0ยฐ, 15ยฐ, 22.5ยฐ, 31.6ยฐ, and 45ยฐ enable fast repeatable common-angle cuts without reading the scale.
  • The 12-inch cross-cut capacity at 90ยฐ handles up to 12-inch wide boards in a single pass โ€” appropriate for 1ร—12 shelving, stair treads, and wide window sills. The 8.5-inch capacity at 45ยฐ covers the majority of 45-degree mitered trim cuts. The included stainless steel fence provides a solid reference surface for consistent angle repeatability.
  • The included 40-tooth carbide blade is a genuine improvement over the thin kerf blades shipped with competing entry-level saws. For baseboard and casing installation, the 40-tooth blade produces clean, paint-ready mitered ends on pine and poplar trim without secondary cleanup sanding.

โš ๏ธ Worth Knowing

  • The TSS103 is a single-bevel saw โ€” the head tilts only to the left for bevel cuts. For crown moulding installation, single-bevel means you flip the crown on the fence to cut both directions rather than tilting the saw head for a second direction. Double-bevel saws ($300โ€“$500 CAD) cut both left and right bevel without repositioning the workpiece, which is faster for large crown moulding jobs.
  • There is no laser guide on the TSS103. Accurate cutting relies on the saw's integrated cut-line guide, the fence measurement scale, and the operator's ability to align the blade to the marked cut line before cutting. A laser guide ($30โ€“$50 accessory or a saw upgrade) significantly improves accuracy for users new to miter saws.
  • The TSS103 is not a sliding compound miter saw โ€” the blade travels down without sliding forward, limiting cross-cut capacity to 12 inches at 90ยฐ. Sliding compound miter saws extend cross-cut capacity to 12โ€“16 inches across the sliding range, enabling cuts in wide stock like 2ร—12 dimensional lumber and 12-inch wide shelf planks without turning the workpiece.
  • The dust bag captures a portion of sawdust but miter saws in general are significant dust producers regardless of bag inclusion โ€” fine sawdust escapes around the blade guard and out the back of the throat plate. For indoor use in a finished space, connecting a shop vac to the dust port alongside the bag significantly improves collection. Budget for this if the saw will be used indoors.
ClearPick Verdict

The Ryobi TSS103 is the best-value entry point into compound miter saw territory for Canadian homeowners. At $199 CAD with a useful 40T blade, 52ยฐ miter range, and 12-inch cross-cut capacity, it covers the full range of standard trim and framing cut tasks. Single-bevel only and no laser are real limitations for high-volume crown moulding or wide-board work โ€” but for the average homeowner doing baseboard, door casing, and frame carpentry, the TSS103 is a capable, affordable workhorse.
