It is honestly not great. ... Three of them stopped working (battery dead). The fourth still works but is the least impressive sounding device Sonos makes.

I know exactly the sound you mean, OP. It is definitely generated by the speaker, and not any external source. I had this a few times with my Roam 1, at around the same time it developed other faults (not charging reliably, dropping off the network, shutting down randomly), it was replaced by the retailer as still under warranty.

It’s incredibly frustrating to setup on a wifi network away from home.

I’m going to only guess that someone may have had the ability to play something on your speaker, not saying it’s for sure the case but I’d definitely look into seeing how secure your internet is and how easily you’ve made your devices to connect to - don’t stress anymore! For a speaker to blast like that it needs data and a signal from a source, someone saw your speaker and played the most loud and annoying sound they could to jolt you awake , for now power it off and do a deep dive later today

Likely real answer: “The challenges implementing on Roam are specifically that it challenges us from getting you to upgrade to a Play r Move.” Going to bet it’s classic feature / price tiering.

When flying and staying at a hotel, I pack a pair of Roam 2 speakers.

I like my Roam 2s a lot. I started with one and now have a stereo pair. ... Maybe start with a Roam, and you’ll probably be tempted to add more speakers down the line anyway. Sonos multi-room is pretty addictive.

It may be a good speaker when taken to bicycle ride or outdoor trip but for in-house use case? I’d go with a new Play

This is something the roam 2 already does.

The thing I’ve learned is it not about wifi speed as much as the quality of the router. I went an eero, it was able to automatically connect the Sonos items to the right ghz etc and I’m still only on 25/10 wifi plan… it’s just me and one other person in the property

I am proof literally 48 hours ago that’s it’s def not always Sonos. Had a router that was 100% the culprit and the new router was an immediate game changer.

I'd love to take my move for big sound and roam 2 to fill spaces when on trips!

It’s very useful. ... 3) Fits in your front pocket. ... 5) Don’t forget it can charge via Qi chargers. You can set it on your nightstand without wires.

It offers better sound than the Roam 2 while being a lot more portable than the Play.

I'm curious how the Play compares to something like the bose soundlink flex gen 2 (rated better than the roam 2) and other such similar sized and popular bluetooth speakers.

✅ What Works

  • Portability is the standout strength — owners specifically praise packing it for flights, hotels, and outdoor trips
  • Fits into an existing Sonos multi-room ecosystem cleanly for owners who already have other Sonos gear
  • Qi wireless charging and pocket-sized form factor draw repeated practical praise

⚠️ Worth Knowing

  • Reliability complaints recur — battery failures and units dropping off the network are the most common negative theme
  • Setup on WiFi networks away from home is described as "incredibly frustrating" by more than one owner
  • Exactly tied at 8 positive/8 negative of 16 mentions — a genuinely divided verdict on a real sample size, not a coin flip on thin data
ClearPick Verdict

The Roam 2 splits exactly evenly — 8 positive, 8 negative of 16 mentions, the largest sample in this category, so the tie is a real, well-evidenced picture rather than noise from a small sample. Owners who use it for its intended case — travel, outdoor trips, tucking into a pocket, pairing into a Sonos multi-room system — report real satisfaction, several specifically packing it for flights and hotel stays. The negative half centers on reliability (batteries dying, units dropping off the network, one owner cycling through three units) and setup friction on unfamiliar WiFi networks away from home. Buy it for travel and outdoor portability where you value the compact size over raw sound quality; if you want a primary in-home speaker, several owners in the same threads point to the larger Sonos Play instead.
