Sadly it doesn't look like it has the processor bump we were all hoping for. Google is saying only a 22% increase in CPU performance over a 4 year old device that was hardly fast when it came out. Hopefully the extra RAM help but this doesn't seem likely to be the full on Apple TV 4K competitor many of us were hoping for.

I hope the engineers at Nvidia who designed the shield are enjoying som fat checks right now because they managed to build a piece of hardware that's not only still relevant but king almost a decade later (first version came out in 2015!)

I've been using Android phones for decades, and I went to look at my Play Points. Zero. I'm not a mobile gamer, so maybe this deal is not for me; otherwise I'd be interested in it for $50 since the Onn 4K's are hard to get your hands on these days.

It is weaker than the Nvidia Shield Pro, so it won't replace mine. Personally, I don't trust Google enough to buy their hardware. They might just drop support but I might be a bit paranoid. It doesn't come with USB-Ports, too. Only WiFi 5 and I'm not sure which Audio formats support passthrough. It's not bad for this price but I think the Apple TV 4K and the Nvidia Shield pro are better overall.

I have a 7.2.4 Atmos setup (and a 5.1.2) and want to play UHD remuxes with lossless Atmos. I replaced my HTPC in 2015 with a Shield (once it sorted out its audio bitstreaming back in the day). I've been coming to these types of posts for years hoping that this is finally the one. As usual I am left with my Shield.

If you're buying a Google TV device, download Projectivy launcher. I paid the $7.50 to customize it as well. It makes the device operate more like AppleTV 4K at half the price. It's not quite as snappy and quick to get into apps, but you get some added bonuses. e.g. Roku Channel. Also Steam Link and Moonlight work much better on Google TV than Apple.

Sadly, another useless device (like the Chromecasts) for Plex. Just can't compete with an Apple TV or a Shield TV.

Just bought one this weekend to replace a Google TV with Chromecast. It's far more responsive, the USB audio output works with higher bitrates, and the Wi-Fi is markedly improved. I'm very satisfied with it.

This is an option for those who want side loading capabilities for Stremio, smart tube, etc.

At $50, I love it. But not for $100. The Onn TV 4K Plus is $30, and damn near perfect.

For normies, this statement is truth. But for those where side loading is important, Apple TV is not a competitor.

For me, Smart Tube alone is a big deciding factor. Youtube without that is unbearable these past few years.

The only thing in my opinion finally beats it is the Dune HD Homastic 4K Plus (if I got name right), now with AVT12 update it also supports Dolby Vision 7 + DTS-HD MA + True HD Atmos + nearly all formats + it's more responsive than Shield Pro

I don't understand how they came up with the price tag. If you showed me these specs compared to the $50 CCwGTV from four years ago, I would have assumed this was a low price model, like $25-35. If this was announced in 2021, people would have assumed it was an incremental upgrade and expected the price to be the same as the original 4K model, maybe $10 more. $100 is honestly insulting. I'm certain they don't expect much consumer sales, instead banking on it being a bundle or promo item.

โœ… What Works

  • Strong Google ecosystem integration, with sideloaded launchers making it feel snappier and closer to Apple TV
  • Noticeably more responsive WiFi and higher-bitrate USB audio versus the older Chromecast with Google TV
  • Considered a good deal at lower/sale prices around $50

โš ๏ธ Worth Knowing

  • Pricing is the most common complaint โ€” several owners call the $100 list price "insulting" for a modest spec bump
  • CPU performance disappoints some, with only a reported 22% gain over the prior generation and no USB ports
  • Lacks full lossless Atmos passthrough for some high-end home theater setups, and is seen as weaker than the Nvidia Shield Pro
ClearPick Verdict

Owner feedback on the Google TV Streamer 4K is split โ€” 6 of 14 mentions positive, 6 negative, 2 mixed โ€” with pricing the most common complaint (3 mentions). Several owners call the $100 list price "insulting" given what they see as only a modest spec bump over the four-year-old original Chromecast with Google TV. CPU performance also draws criticism, with only a reported 22% gain over the predecessor and no USB ports, and some note it lacks full lossless Atmos passthrough for high-end home theater setups. On the positive side, owners upgrading report noticeably better WiFi and USB audio, and sideloaded launchers make it feel snappier, closer to an Apple TV. A good value at a discount (~$50) or for typical streaming use; buyers wanting raw performance or advanced audio passthrough may prefer an Nvidia Shield Pro or Apple TV 4K.
