When they launched the S3 they deployed before it was properly tested and you can confirm that based on their support queue going to over a month with zero replies for their customers. People complaining had and have legit reasons to do so. They released a product they knew had major flaws at the time and refused to stop selling it while they worked out the issues that only created a bigger backlog.

Dog walker here. Fi 3 is on like 8 of the dogs I walk. If you are mostly urban/suburban, the battery life is unbeatable and the app is clean. But if you are doing serious deep-woods hiking where signal is spotty, I usually tell clients to look at something more robust. Fi is great for "peace of mind" in the city, maybe less so for "search and rescue" in the middle of nowhere.

I started with Fi and wasn't entirely satisfied, so I added a Tractive. If I had to choose one or the other, I would most likely go with Tractive. More accurate, and I like the way you can view recent tracking history by choosing a time frame. The thing we mainly use Fi for is keeping tabs on exercise. Battery life is not as important as you might think: Fi is definitely better, but Tractive can go many days without a charge -- it's good enough.

I must have been stuck with that guy. The hoops he made me jump took weeks before they finally just admitted the base had died. No one gave me anything though. The damned thing only tells me my dog left home when she's a half mile or more away. ๐Ÿ˜•

I've had Fi for a couple years now. Pro: Good battery life and nice collar/device size. Con: Tracking is just awful. The registration of her current position to the map is always way off. Often it looks like she is well outside the safe zone and a couple houses or across the street. Also the updates are painfully slow, sometimes it isn't updated for a half hour or more, so using for an escape artist would be pointless.

When it comes to the Fi collar I feel like people sleep on the sleep tracking (no pun intended) My frenchie was having frequent disturbances in his sleep. Brought it up to his vet, turns out he was having seizures?!! Never would have known without the Fi app tracking his snoozing. I hope they come out with a feature that alerts you when they have sleep disturbances, that would be awesome. Anyways big Fi fans in our household.

I've had this collar for about a year now. Definitely worth the money. I use it when my guy roams to my neighbors barn. Not perfectly accurate but it does the job. Also the battery lasts forever, I think I charged it maybe 5 times in a year.

I have had a Fi2 and now a Fi3 for 5 years and have had issues where it said my dog left the house but did not. I actually bought a Tractive 6... I really like everything about it aside from the fact that it is so bulky. App is way better. Walk is more accurate... My Fi subscription runs out in June and I refuse to pay $189 for a less accurate tracking subscription.

โœ… What Works

  • 2-3 month battery life per charge is the longest of any GPS dog tracker available โ€” Canadian dog owners who travel or forget to charge consistently cite the battery life as the reason they chose Fi over Tractive
  • AI-powered behavior detection monitors activity, rest, barking, licking, scratching, eating, and drinking โ€” the most comprehensive health and behavior monitoring available in a consumer dog collar
  • Integrated collar design replaces your dog's existing collar entirely โ€” cleaner and more secure than clip-on trackers that can detach during active play
  • Apple Watch integration provides location and health data on your wrist without opening the app โ€” meaningful for Canadian runners and cyclists who exercise with their dogs

โš ๏ธ Worth Knowing

  • Live tracking update frequency is slower than Tractive โ€” Fi updates less frequently in real-time tracking mode, which matters for escape artists where second-by-second location is critical
  • Subscription required for GPS features โ€” monthly or annual plan adds to total ownership cost beyond the collar purchase
  • Better for health monitoring and battery convenience than for maximum real-time tracking precision โ€” Tractive leads on tracking accuracy, Fi leads on battery and health data
ClearPick Verdict

Owner sentiment on the Fi Series 3 is now genuinely split. The most serious complaint is a rocky S3 launch โ€” Reddit users describe a support queue backlog over a month long during the rollout, plus base units that failed outright. The recurring day-to-day gripe is tracking: multiple owners say the collar's location updates lag by 30+ minutes and the map position is often a house or two off, which several say makes it unsuitable for an actual escape artist. Battery life and sleep-based health monitoring still draw real praise from long-term owners in suburban/urban settings. Buy it for peace-of-mind convenience in town; if your dog roams and you need tight, fast tracking, owners point to Tractive instead.
