Regardless of which machine you have, you can always call Nespresso customer service the next time it malfunctions. They'll walk you through the steps to trouble shoot and/or replace the machine if the issues continue. By the way, were did you purchase your machine? Sounds like you might have just gotten a lemon, because I think most people aren't as vigilant about their machines' care and there haven't been many complaints.

Not in my experience. I don't do anything special to ensure it runs smoothly (and in my case I don't usually notice the pod receptacle is full until the top can't close to make a coffee), but I haven't had a single issue. It tells me to descale it every 6-12 months, I do the descaling cycle, and the light turns green again.

4 years it's quite the lifetime for the vertuos. My vertuo is only 2 years old but we got the same machine at my job recently and the difference in the coffee is INSANE. I honestly think the machines aren't built to last and the quality of the coffee inevitably goes down.

The first one I had did something like this, I tried to descale it and it locked in the process. I called Nespresso, they walked me through what it was doing and decided that it was a faulty machine. They sent me a brand new one and requested the old one back. I've had no issues since then.

We've had a Nespresso Vertuo Plus for about a year and a half now. It's been a constant headache. About 3-4 months ago It turned Half Red/Half Green, and we ran every troubleshooting tip we could to fix it and that light would not go away no matter how hard we tried - Including running proper descaling process.

At first I really liked the taste of the coffee and espresso, but for the past few months it just hasn't tasted t he same, and more recently it seems to produce less crema than initially. I confess that I have not been religious about cleaning and scaling, but this morning I measured the temperature of the espresso and it was only about 150 degrees F, so I think that the temperature may be part of the problem.

We used to have a vertuo plus that consistently made incredibly good coffee.

โœ… What Works

  • Each VertuoLine pod has a barcode that the machine reads to auto-configure brewing speed, temperature, and volume โ€” there are no settings to dial in and no skill required. Insert, close, press once, done.
  • Crema on the espresso sizes is notably thick and cafรฉ-quality for a pod machine โ€” the centrifusion spinning action produces a persistent foam layer that most other pod systems don't replicate.
  • Five cup sizes from a single machine cover the full range from a short double espresso through a large 414ml carafe-style coffee without any accessory changes. The transition between sizes is seamless.
  • Forty-second heat-up from cold start and a 2-minute idle-then-off cycle make this a practical morning machine for time-pressed households โ€” no warming-up waiting, no forgetting to turn it off.

โš ๏ธ Worth Knowing

  • Vertuo pods are proprietary โ€” third-party pods don't work due to the barcode DRM system. Pods cost approximately $1.25โ€“$2.00 CAD each, making daily use expensive ($35โ€“$60/month for one drink daily). Nespresso subscription helps slightly but doesn't eliminate the ongoing cost.
  • This is not a traditional espresso machine โ€” the Centrifusion system produces a different pressure profile than 9-bar espresso, and the result, while enjoyable, is not the same as a cafรฉ espresso. Espresso purists should look at the Breville Barista Express or De'Longhi Dedica Arte instead.
  • Pod waste is real โ€” each cup produces a foil-topped plastic pod. Nespresso has a recycling program with drop-off locations, but it requires collecting and returning pods rather than recycling kerbside, which most Canadian households don't do consistently.
  • The milk frother for latte and cappuccino is sold separately (the Aeroccino is frequently bundled but check before purchasing). Without it, this makes black coffee and espresso only.
ClearPick Verdict

The Nespresso Vertuo Plus is the easiest path to consistently good coffee and crema-topped espresso in a Canadian kitchen โ€” one button, 40 seconds, done, no skill required. The trade-off is complete pod lock-in at $1.25โ€“$2.00 per cup and meaningful pod waste. For households replacing a daily cafรฉ habit (where the economics actually improve), or for anyone who values zero-friction mornings over cost per cup, this is the best system in its category. Buyers who brew more than two cups daily or are price-sensitive about ongoing costs should look at bean-to-cup alternatives.
