I have one for my backyard since I don't have the time at the moment to put in an in ground system, and the software is clunky and needs streamlining. But it is vastly superior to all the other programmable hose timers out there.

I have both. When I bought my home, the previous owners had set up a sprinkler system with the Rachio. I wanted to add another zone, and the b-hyve + a soaker hose was a lot cheaper ... I actually am happy with both of them. The rachio is much smarter than the b-hyve, which has fewer bells and whistles ... But I can already tell it's going to eat batteries for breakfast. Make sure you have a bunch of rechargeable AA batteries!

I have the B-hyve the app is adequate and has gotten better with updates. Costumer service was top notch when I had a problem and needed help. The wifi portion stopped working and I had a new unit within two days at no charge.

I have the Orbit 12-station. My only gripes are the following: 1) The smart watering feature doesn't really work well for me, so I programmed it with traditional timers ... 2) Orbit does not allow programming from a desktop. As far as I can tell, you need to use the smartphone/tablet app. Not a huge deal, but an odd omission.

I picked up [this 4-zone](https://www.homedepot.com/p/Orbit-4-Outlet-Integrated-Watering-System-56545/205584851) system last season, and by the time august came and we had 100+ for a month straight I had a zone that would always get stuck open.

First and foremost I want to say that the B-Hyve devices work, in terms of opening and closing water valves, very well. I am actually impressed by how well they operate ... The problem I have had so far with this has been that the B-Hyve app and hub do not integrate control of all the devices into a group to allow for seamless configuration of multiple devices.

โœ… What Works

  • WiFi control from anywhere via the B-hyve app means you can start, stop, or adjust watering schedules from your phone while at work or on vacation โ€” particularly valuable for Canadian cottage-season planning when you're away for weeks.
  • Smart weather delays automatically skip scheduled watering on rain days based on local forecast data โ€” a genuine water-saving feature that many owners say pays for the timer in a single summer.
  • Alexa and Google Assistant integration enables voice control: 'Alexa, start watering the garden' works without opening the app. Setup is straightforward if you already have a smart home ecosystem.
  • Installation takes minutes on a standard 3/4" hose thread โ€” no tools, no plumbing. Screw on, pair to the hub, and schedule from the app.

โš ๏ธ Worth Knowing

  • Requires 2.4 GHz WiFi โ€” does not work on 5 GHz networks. Many modern Canadian routers broadcast both bands under the same name, requiring you to split them or force a 2.4 GHz connection during setup.
  • Single zone only โ€” one hose bib, one watering schedule. For properties with multiple hose connections or garden areas needing different schedules, multiple timers must be purchased and managed separately.
  • Battery-powered (4 AA batteries) โ€” not wired. Battery life is approximately 12 months under typical use, but below-average Canadian winters may reduce this if the timer is left installed year-round.
  • Occasional app connectivity drops require re-pairing โ€” a known issue in the B-hyve ecosystem that appears after firmware updates or router changes. Resolution is usually 5โ€“10 minutes of troubleshooting.
ClearPick Verdict

The Orbit B-hyve Smart Hose Timer is the most practical smart watering solution for Canadian homeowners with a single-zone setup โ€” weather-delay automation, away-from-home control, and Alexa/Google integration at $79 CAD. The 2.4 GHz WiFi requirement trips up modern dual-band routers during setup, and the single-zone limit requires multiple purchases for complex gardens. For a front or back garden with one hose bib, it's the right product. Take it inside before the Canadian winter to preserve battery and components.
