I bought a fully loaded XPS 13 Plus a couple months ago. I agree with the tone of the article where this isn't a good laptop choice for most people, but if you're in a situation where you're not affected by its many negatives, it's an awesome little machine.
I got the 9320 5 months ago and haven't had the same problems as you. Running Windows 11 22H2 and Ubuntu 22.04 without any issues. Before I had the 9300 and 7390 and 9360 in Rose Gold. No problems.
I just plugged in a USB-C to DisplayPort adapter and then into a monitor, and it immediately recognized the monitor on both USB ports. I have a USB-C direct monitor at work. I'll try that later and get back to you. So far so good, though.
I've had FOUR total units ie 3 replacements of my XPS 13 plus so far. And even though this latest one too has issues with windows hello IR cameras freezing or a sticky touchpad... Won't even mention the f****** keycaps falling off and issues from all the other units, not to mention the endless bluetooth issues....
I've also been really unhappy with my XPS 13 plus. Battery life is abysmal, trackpad has major issues, and gets really hot. I had to have my first unit replaced, bc it became completely unusable... They clearly just shoved a sub-par product out the door (at a really high price) and paid for heavily biased reviews.
Got my 9320 right at release, and I must say, I'm at the end with my tackpad issues as well. It really makes the computer un/less usable. Lately, I've been remoting in to the device 75% of the time to avoid the issue -- bad burn for what's supposed to be a flagship product...
I've also had mine since October and no problems thus far. This is my 3rd XPS none of them had any major issues (just the Killer bug, which was fixed with an update)... The only problem is that it runs very hot but it's not that annoying. I use it with a dock so the lack of ports doesn't bother me.
I'll second your disappointment with the xps 13 plus. I have the same fan noise. Started about 2 weeks after receiving it. I ignore it mostly but it is an indicator of poor design or build quality. Didn't realize so many others had the same problem. It runs very hot... The camera stopped working on mine. Required some time over the course of two weeks with tech support to get it working again.
I've had this laptop for about 3 months now, and overall I would not recommend for anyone to buy this... The system is fast... Then we get to the negatives. The system gets hot. VERY HOT. Even just doing one google search with 2 tabs open the bottom will get very hot... The touch-bar looks great but isn't a great choice. The non physical escape key isn't great and sometimes the bar does not work for a day or 2 for no reason before magically beginning to work again.
