We have one in our bedroom running 24/7. Every month or so I take the filters out and blow them out with my leaf blower. There is usually a lot of white dust all over. Must be working .

It helped with wildfire smoke, but does not keep up with the odor of a teenage boy.
I bought a few of these when they went on sale early 2021. That has prevented three years of wildfire smoke in my town - haven't turned them on once. A+ worthwhile investment.
Except, air will preferentially take the path of least resistance and ignore the carbon altogether in favor of going through the gaps. This is just a s*** product.
I just got 4 HEPA filters on Amazon for $30 the other day. I left my last one in for over a year and it was almost black, but I always cleaned the other filters. I also have 5 pets.
None of those will work for long-term odor control. The carbon filters in most purifiers get clogged very quickly due to their limited capacity.
I have one of these (and numerous others). This is fine for a bedroom, however, you typically need to max out the level for it to be effective and the fan noise is a bit annoying. ... What it does is grab fine particulates that cause allergic reactions that are floating in the air and it does help reduce those in room.
I have horrible allergies and last summer's Canadian wildfire smoke only made things worse. Stuck one of these bad boys in my bedroom and it's been running non stop except for cleaning. I noticed a hugged difference and would definitely recommend.
We have one in the primary bedroom, kitchen and family room. They run 24/7 usually. Works really well and seems to collect the dust instead of the dust collecting on our things. In the kitchen it's nice when cooking or if you let something sear too long and need to air out the kitchen
โ What Works
- CADR 243 CFM is among the highest in this price tier โ a higher CADR means faster air turnover, which matters for reducing allergen concentration during high-pollution events. The 5500-2 processes more air per minute than most competitors under $300.
- Washable AOC carbon pre-filter eliminates one filter replacement entirely โ while the HEPA and activated carbon filters need replacing annually, the fabric pre-filter washes in cold water and reinstalls. Over 5 years, this saves $50-75 in filter costs compared to purifiers with disposable pre-filters.
- Auto mode responds to real particle sensor data โ the 5500-2 automatically adjusts fan speed based on the air quality indicator within seconds of detecting elevated particle levels. This reactive approach outperforms simple timers or manual operation.
- PlasmaWave ionization can be independently disabled โ for users concerned about ozone from ionization, the PlasmaWave function has a dedicated on/off button. Running with PlasmaWave off uses only the HEPA and carbon filtration, which is the safer choice for household use.
โ ๏ธ Worth Knowing
- PlasmaWave creates trace ozone โ while Winix states ozone output is within safe limits, households with asthma, infants, or individuals sensitive to ozone should disable PlasmaWave and use HEPA-only mode.
- No app or WiFi connectivity on the 5500-2 โ this is a fully manual + auto-mode unit. Remote control or schedule programming requires adding a smart plug. For native app control, consider the Levoit Core 400S.
- Higher filter replacement cost than Levoit โ annual filter replacement (~$50-60 CAD for HEPA + carbon set) is slightly higher than the Levoit Core 300 or 400S. The washable pre-filter partially offsets this over time.
- Sleep mode indicator light stays on โ the display doesn't fully dim during sleep mode, which can be distracting in dark bedrooms. A simple light-blocking solution (tape, small cover) resolves it but is slightly annoying.
The Winix 5500-2 has earned its long-term bestseller status. Exceptional CADR, real auto mode, a washable pre-filter, and genuine reliability make it one of the best air purifiers you can buy in Canada under $300. The lack of app connectivity is its main gap versus Levoit; the PlasmaWave ozone concern is easily addressed by disabling it. If you want room air purification without complexity, this is the unit.
