I've gotten half a dozen smokers from that dumpster in the past 6 months. They throw them away if they get returns instead of sending them back out. Its insane that they waste so many.
Pit Boss 700FB Wood Pellet Grill with Flame Broiler
The Pit Boss 700FB (ASIN: B083T3Q31G) is a wood pellet grill available on Amazon.ca for $599 CAD. Its slide-plate Flame Broiler enables direct sear temperatures up to 1000ยฐF, making it one of the few pellet grills under $600 that can genuinely sear a steak without a separate appliance.

I know you'll read this in the manual but warming it up on the smoke setting every time you use it is crucial. Also the Manuel says to preheat to high for 10-15 min then lower to your target temp every time you use it but I found once it's warmed on the smoke setting you're good to go straight to your target temp. It is initially going to go about 50 degrees over your desired temp as it warms up.
I have an electric smoker (Cook Shack). Good taste but no smoke ring. The Pitt Boss makes the pink band in the meat and tastes great. I think I dried out a few cuts of meat while practicing but I am slowly learning its quirks.
I am a die-hard kettle-grill or stick-burner guy. I have despised the very idea of pellet grills. I won't say I'm a convert, but it sure is handy in the winter months. Come summer, I'll be using it to finish briskets and pork butts after a few hours on the offset.
How do you like the Smoke Daddy controller? Ive had about enough of the swings i get from the factory one.
welcome to the world of easy smoking pellet grills/smokers. I would not have it any other way.
My 700fb was great for a year but now it is consistently running 50 degrees or so hot. This is even after a full replacement of the temp probe and board and a thorough cleaning
Unless you're in a hot climate I found that the P1 setting on mine keeps the temps the most stable and doesn't spike nearly as much.
We were pretty happy with the results. Still learning the hot spots and temp on the smoker. It likes to spike and get hot.
โ What Works
- The Flame Broiler slide-plate system is Pit Boss's defining advantage over most competing pellet grills in this price range. Sliding the plate open exposes food directly to the fire pot flame, enabling sear temperatures up to 1000ยฐF โ something most pellet grills can't achieve without a separate sear station attachment. This means you can smoke a steak at 225ยฐF and then slide the plate open for a final sear without moving the food to a different appliance.
- At 700 sq in of cooking area and $599 CAD, the Pit Boss 700FB offers some of the best square-inch-per-dollar value in the pellet grill category. You get a meaningful cooking surface capable of handling multiple racks of ribs or a whole brisket without needing to spend $1,000+. For buyers focused on capacity at a budget-conscious price, this competes well above its price class.
- The 21 lb pellet hopper is generously sized relative to the price point. You can realistically do a 10+ hour smoke without refilling, which covers most pork shoulder and brisket cooks. The digital LED controller is simple but accurate enough for consistent results.
- The front grease bucket design is practical and easier to manage than rear-drain systems. You can monitor and empty it without reaching around a hot grill, and the bucket pulls out without tools during a cook.
โ ๏ธ Worth Knowing
- The base 700FB model has no WiFi or app connectivity. If remote monitoring and control from your phone is important for your cooking style, you'll need to step up to the Pit Boss Pro Series or consider the Camp Chef or Traeger equivalents at a higher price point. The no-WiFi limitation is a meaningful gap for overnight cooks.
- The temperature range tops out at 500ยฐF in standard convection mode, which is lower than some competing pellet grills. The Flame Broiler solves the sear problem but creates a direct-flame zone rather than a high ambient temperature โ useful for searing but not for pizzas or other high-ambient baking applications.
- Temperature consistency at the 700FB's price point is good but not exceptional. Expect ยฑ20โ25ยฐF swings versus the ยฑ5โ10ยฐF you'd see on premium units. For smoking, this doesn't matter much โ a 20-degree swing on a 10-hour brisket cook is negligible. For precision baking, it matters more.
- Quality lump charcoal pellets or name-brand hardwood pellets are important on any pellet grill, but especially at this price point where the controller's temperature recovery isn't as fast as premium units. Cheap pellets with inconsistent density cause bigger temperature swings and more smoke flavor variation.
The Pit Boss 700FB is the best pellet grill under $600 for buyers who want both smoking capability and a genuine sear option from a single unit. The Flame Broiler is a real differentiator that no Traeger or Z Grills at this price can match, and the 700 sq in cooking area is generous. The trade-offs are no WiFi, wider temperature swings than premium units, and a simpler controller. It's a strong value buy for buyers who are new to pellet grilling or want an affordable second grill โ experienced pellet grillers who want app control should budget for the next tier up.
